Obituary

Jerry was born February 1, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a high school varsity basketball player, president of his class, a delegate to Boys State, editor of the school paper, president of the local chapter of Quill and Scroll and graduated with honors from the Cherokee Iowa High School.

He spent five years in military service in the infantry, military police, and the United States Marine Corps Air Corps where he served as Base First Sergeant of the El Toro Jet Fighter Base in California. Jerry was a veteran of the Korean War.
Jerry married Vickie Victorino of Puna, Hawaii on September 11, 1954, in Washington, D.C.

Following his Marine Corps duty, Jerry attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota where he was an art instructor for two years and a lecturer.

Jerry was a calendar illustrator in Minneapolis and a book designer for Meredith Publishing Company. He was the Art Director for Look Magazine in Des Moines where he worked for 11 years. Later Jerry opened his own art and design studio which he operated for many years.

He was a founder and later president of the Art Directors Association of Iowa. Jerry was the winner of many art awards along with judging numerous art shows.

He was the owner and President of Alingh Dimensional Images, Inc., maker of metal, 52-millimeter toy soldiers sold around the world. His toy soldiers are in many museums and private collections in many states.
Jerry is survived by his bride of 67 years - Vickie, and children Steve (Janet) Alingh of Cherokee, Iowa and Cathy (Ken) Dohrmann of Omaha, and a grandson, Nicholas Alingh.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 4, 2021, at Iles Dunn Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:30. Committal will follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
