Obituary

Gladys B. Clark passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at age 98. Born Gladys Aileen Bieghler in Sheldahl, IA, on June 7, 1910 her family moved to Elkhart, IA, where she attended Elkhart High School and met her future husband, the late Frank A. Clark, author of the Country Parson. Gladys was an alumnus of Iowa State Teachers' College now Northern Iowa Univ. and taught music in Algona, IA, and Farrar, IA. Gladys and Frank were married in 1938 and lived in Des Moines where they raised three sons.

Gladys was active at the First Christian Church in Des Moines throughout her life as a member of the Chancel Choir, Christian Women's Fellowship, library volunteer, teacher, discussion leader and occasional Chapel organist. She was always up to date on national and world affairs and, with her husband Frank, was active in peace groups and social movements. She was an avid reader and an enthusiastic patron of the Des Moines Symphony and Civic Music.

Gladys had retired to Scottish Rite Park, 2901 Woodland, Ave., and it was there, among friends and surrounded by her family that she passed away. She is survived by her three sons, Mark Clark of Tiffin, IA, Paul Clark of rural Mt. Grove, MO, and Bruce Clark of Bellevue, IA; a niece, Mary Lee of Des Moines, whom she loved as a daughter; six grandchildren, Amanda (Joe)O'Sullivan of Mt. Prospect, Robin (Joe) Clark-Bennet of Iowa City, IA, Kate (Steve) Miller of Dubuque, IA, Suzanne Clark of New Haven, CT, Brian Clark of Minneapolis, MN and Ross Clark of Madison, WI; four great-grandchildren, Nora and Hannah O'Sullivan of Mt. Prospect, IL and Joseph and Maya Bennet of Iowa City, IA. Gladys is also survived by her sister, Nancy Hiatt, of Ames, IA; a niece, Elizabeth (Max) Bechtol of rural Elkhart, Iowa; nephews, Tom (Jill) Clark of West Des Moines, Steve ( Deirdre) Hiatt of San Francisco, CA, John (Holly) Clark of Des Moines, Frank (Carole) Clark of Fort Collins CO; a cousin, Ann (Noel) Peterson of Rochester MN. She is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; and a sister, Virginia Bieghler McKee.

Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday (today) at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn's Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 18, 2009 at First Christian Church. Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery, Elkhart, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church.
