Obituary

Gladys Kostusik Mericle, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2010 at Bishop Drumm Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She had moved to Des Moines three years ago to be near her daughter, Judy Zammar. Gladys was born on March 27, 1915, the daughter of immigrant parents from Poland, Anna and Samuel Fritz. She was educated and lived through the great depression and spent most of her life in the greater Kansas City area.

On October 25, 1937, she married Anthony V. Kostusik. As a beautiful wife and loving mother, she devoted her entire life to her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Christ. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Louis Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri.

Mom was always great in her kitchen and always had a cake or cookies baking. One of mom's other talents was her gift in making beautiful draperies. She also worked tirelessly for 24 years to keep navigational charts current for her son, Tony when he was an active pilot.

Her first husband passed away in 1976 and after a few years, she and a fellow Church member friend, Ross Mericle who was a widower, married in 1981. They enjoyed 15 years together in Lenexa, Kansas until he passed away in 1996.

Gladys was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Fritz and Helen Fritz; and brother, Frank Fritz.

Left to mourn her death are her children, Tony (Judy) Kostusik and Judy (Ed) Zammar; her grandchildren, Jean (Todd) Brower, Jim (Teresa) Kostusik, David Zammar and Steve Zammar; and her great-grandchildren, Kevin Brower, Phil Brower, Allison Kostusik and Lauren Kostusik; her stepchildren, Ross (Joan) Mericle and Gail (Jerry) Ishmael; her sister, Stella Kulik; and many nieces and nephews.
