Obituary

Gloria Mae Peterson, youngest child of J. Harold and Florence (Johnson) Peterson, was born December 6, 1924 in Madrid, Iowa and died at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 25 days on July 1, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid with burial at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

She was the first baby baptized in the current St. John's Lutheran Church sanctuary, Madrid, and she affirmed her faith at Augustana Lutheran Church, Boone. She attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Boone High School in 1942. On September 18, 1946, Gloria was united in marriage to Donald M. Lamb at Augustana Lutheran Church, Boone. They made their home in Madrid, where Don was associated with City State Bank. This union was blessed with two children, Sandra Kae and Stephen Craig. Gloria and Don celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in September 1986. Don died in August 1988.

Gloria was employed for 32 years as a bookkeeper at the Madrid Home, retiring on September 25, 1992. She was formerly employed with the G. W. York Company of Madrid. After living in her home on South Union Street for 55 years, she moved to The Cedars Assisted Living Facility in 2003.

She was a 60-year member and past president of Chapter ID P.E.O. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served in various capacities in the Lutheran Church Women of St. John's organization.

Gloria was a kind and gentle person, always caring for others first. She was a dedicated family person and her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She enjoyed square dancing, golf, bowling, genealogy, and playing bridge, but she mostly enjoyed meeting and talking to those with whom she came in contact.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Drexel Peterson; sister-in-law, Ruth Peterson; brothers-in-law, John McLeod and Earl Jacobson; and niece, Anne Miller.

She is survived by her children, Sandy of Johnston and Steve and Deb of Atlantic; grandchildren, Erika and Brandon Cave of Hohenfels, Germany and Kaarin and Bradley Fasse of Grimes; great-granddaughter, Hannah Fasse of Grimes; sister, Irene McLeod Jacobson of Boone; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, at Iles Funeral Homes - Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid or Madrid Public Library. Online condolences may be made to www.IlesCares.com.
