Godfrey Heger, 92, died peacefully with family by his side February 5, 2022 at the University Park Care Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He will be missed by everyone who knew him and especially his wife, Margaret, and children Doug, Jerry, Earl, Larry, Ronny and Patty.

Godfrey was born in Cologne, MN on October 26, 1929, the second of three children of Eberhard and Frances (Willems) Heger. He attended St. Peter's Elementary School and graduated from Dowling High School in 1947. Godfrey volunteered for the Marine Corps and served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea during the war from 1952-1953. He returned home and worked for Archer Daniels Midland in Des Moines for 38 years. In 1957, Godfrey married Margaret Ann Bray.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for over 60 years.

His favorite pastimes were fishing and playing baseball, basketball and cards with family and friends. He also loved anything farming-related and could fix most anything although not always in accordance with local code or the most recent repair manual. He was a jack-of-all-trades.

Godfrey is survived by his wife, Margaret, and six children: Doug (Kim) Heger of Ankeny, IA; Jerry Heger of Palm Springs, CA; Earl (Linda) Heger of Des Moines, IA; Larry Heger of Des Moines, IA; Ronny (Laura) Heger of Naperville, IL; and Patty (Ross) Breed of Des Moines, IA.

He was very proud of his grandchildren: Tim (Devin), Emily (Mike) Leland and Michael (Kelly) Heger; Heather, Stephanie and Patrick Heger; Nick and Ryan Heger; and Jessica (Jarrod) Cain.

He was also very proud of his great-grandchildren: Kennedy, Kinnick and Kameron Cain; Cassie Heger and Tommy Wilson-Heger; Leilani Leland; and Griffin Heger.

He is also survived by sister-in-law Jean Heger; brother-and sister-in-law John and Jann Bray; brother-in-law Tom Bray; and sister-in-law Gail Bray.

He was preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law Kilian and Mary Heger; brother Dick Heger; and brothers-and sisters-in-law Mary and Jim Kennedy, Georga Bray and Joe Bray.

The family would like to sincerely thank University Park, Hospice of the Midwest and the Veterans Administration who took such wonderful care of Godfrey.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 14, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
