On Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 4:25 p.m. Gordon Anthony Formaro of Des Moines, Iowa passed away in his sleep surrounded by close family members. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 16 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Gordon was born on May 18, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was one of 13 children born to Thiabaldi "Tom" and Carmella Formaro. At the age of 17 years he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class. He proudly served on the USS Smalley as Baker 3rd Class during World War II from March 31, 1944 through January 30, 1946.

On July 4, 1951, he married the love of his life Carmelia "Malena" Fusaro. His love and dedication to Malena were unmatched. Together they raised three lovely daughters, Susanna Formaro (Susan Maro), Nancy Formaro and Rosanne (Formaro) Chandlee.

Gordon was employed at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company from February 11, 1959 through March 1, 1989. Additionally, he worked at Helen and Pat's Restaurant. He also owned and operated the Saylorville Dairy Sweet (Gordono's) for many years.

Gordon was known to all as a happy, caring and giving man. He loved Italian cuisine and has baked Italian bread and cookies for all who knew him.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Malena Formaro and eleven of his siblings. He is survived by his brother, Jimmy Formaro and his numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was proud to be a Formaro. He is also survived by his three daughters, Susanna, Nancy and Rosanne and son-in-law, Jim Chandlee.

Gordon was a dedicated, doting grandfather and friend to Mark (Liz) and Steve (Lydia) Chandlee. He equally loved and was loved by his great-grandchildren, Ryan, Adam, Joseph and Vincent Chandlee and Magdalena and Luke Chandlee. Lastly he leaves behind many dedicated friends whom he considered family.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Health Hospice or St. Ambrose Cathedral.
