Gordon M. Chapman, 75, died Thursday, June 16, 2005 from complications of a stroke. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 19 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Burial will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Gordon was a life long resident of Des Moines. In 1947, Gordon won the Iowa State high school doubles championship for North High School. He starred on the University of Iowa tennis team in 1949 and 1950, and then was stricken with polio. In a comeback that received statewide press coverage, he returned to the Hawkeye tennis team in 1952 and finished second in doubles in the Big Ten Tournament. Gordon was an avid racquetball player and loved University of Iowa athletics.

Gordon was a Jewish War Veteran and a member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, the Iowa Letterman's Association, and B'nai B'rith. He retired in 1993 after a successful career with Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corporation.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Leo Chapman.

He is survived by his sons, Lawrence and his wife Karen of Urbandale, and Jeffrey and his wife Sheila of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Andra Lynn, William Garrett and Morgan Leigh; and his aunt, Julia Chapman of Des Moines.
