Obituary

Gordon Wayne Segelke, 84, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022, in Des Moines. Services will be held 11 am Saturday, March 26, 2022, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with a visitation beginning at 10 am. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Madrid, Iowa.

Gordon was born June 9, 1937, in Cherokee, IA, to Harry and Nettie (Perry) Segelke. He grew up on the family farm in Sutherland, IA, and graduated from Sutherland High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD.

Gordon worked as a CPA for Easter Enterprises, Inc. for most of his working career, retiring in 1994 as their CFO. Gordon returned to rural life in his retirement and spent 22 years on his acreage near Granger. He enjoyed Big Band music, his love of music started in high school and was a lifelong passion. He led keyboard sing-a-longs at Deerfield Retirement Community and Cedar Ridge Village. Gordon was an avid hydroponic tomato greenhouse grower. He loved his farm dogs, Molly and Brutus, woodworking and family genealogy. Gordon always looked forward to the Perry, Wilson, and Segelke family reunions, events, holidays, and especially birthdays. Family was truly important to Gordon.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Barbara (Mataya) Segelke; his daughters with Brenda (Gopperton) Oliphant, Susan Maass of Austin, TX, Sheryl (John) Dutcher of Johnston, step children, Julie (Keith) Armstrong of West Des Moines, Mark Rectenbaugh of Alamogordo, NM, Karen (Mark) Neff of Bondurant; sisters in law, Irene Segelke of Paullina, IA, Jackie Waggoner of Sutherland; grandchildren, Katie (Ray) Maass of Millbrae, CA, Nick (Amanda Barringer) Maass of Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte (Nathan Graff) Dutcher of West Des Moines, Cathleen (Nate Self) Dutcher of Ankeny; great-grandchild, Vera Maass; nieces, Janet Becker of Windsor Heights, Judy (Duane) Riedemann of Sutherland, Renee Severson of Ankeny; nephew, Ron Segelke of Sutherland; step grandchildren, Michael Rectenbaugh, Meagan Rectenbaugh, Michelle Harrell all of Alamogordo, NM, Christopher Neff of Iowa City; step great grandchild, Liam Harrell. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Burnelle Segelke, Donald Segelke; and son in law, Douglas Maass.
