Obituary

Grace Ilene Young, 87, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2025 in Perry, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The family will greet guests from 10:00 - 11:00 am, and a memorial service will begin at 11:00 am. All are welcome to attend a luncheon at the church following the service. Immediate family will lay Grace to rest at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Grace was born October 21, 1937 to Edward and Louise (Urhammer) Kubicek at their family home in Gladbrook, Iowa. After graduating high school, Grace married Carey Warren Young on August 11, 1956. They made their home in Urbandale, Iowa and raised three children, Lisa, Laurie, and Larry.

Grace worked for GMAC Financial Services for most of her career, before retiring in 1993. As it turned out, she was not quite ready for retirement, and worked for the City of West Des Moines before her retirement in 2000.

West Des Moines Christian Church was a very special place to Grace, and she showed that by giving her time back to the church. She could be found volunteering her time with the care department, who wrote letters to those in need, and was known to help in the kitchen making meals for various events. The annual church garage sale was one of Grace’s favorite activities to be involved in. Outside of her church involvement, Grace was active in the Phi Tau Omega philanthropic sorority.

Cooking was Grace’s true passion. Her love was shown through the meals she created for her friends and family. Many celebrations and gatherings, from weddings to funerals, were made to be more special because of the care put into meals by Grace. She had a giving heart, and was often described as someone who would give you the shirt off of her back.

Grace is survived by her children, Lisa (Dennis) Bair, and Larry (Sonya) Young; son-in-law Doug Hunemiller, brother-in-law Kenneth Debner; seven grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter Laurie Hunemiller; siblings Helen Debner and Melvin Kubicek; and an infant sister.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
