Obituary

Grace Mary Merical, 99, was blessed with a peaceful passing on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Vintage Hills at Prairie Trail, in Ankeny. In agreement with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, October 20, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Waukee. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at the church. A private committal service will take place at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, in Dallas Center.

Grace was born September 25, 1915, the first of six children for Jacob and Irene Forret on the family farm between Van Meter and Waukee. Grace enjoyed a celebration of her 99th birthday with family and friends.

Grace graduated from Van Meter Community School in 1933 and then studied at Four C's Business School in Des Moines before beginning her career. Her employment included John Reagan Law Office, Russell Loan & Title, and Emily Fidler, Dallas County Recorder.

Grace married Dillon Merical on August 31, 1940. They were blessed with three children, and in 1959, Grace returned to work as the Van Meter Community School secretary until she retired in 1984. She will be remembered by many students at Van Meter as their mom at school.

Those relatives who preceded Grace in death were her husband of 64 years, Dillon; parents Jacob and Irene Forret; sisters Bernice Quinn and Janet Mullen; brother William Forret; brothers-in-law C. Wayne Losh, Joseph Quinn, Thomas Mullen and sisters-in-law June Forret and Doris Forret.

Grace is survived by her daughter, Julia (Robert) Rotach; son, Jerel (Elaine) Merical; daughter, Janel (Michael) Jackson; brother, Francis Forret; sister, Adeline Downey; and a host of many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A great source of joy in her life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: grandson, John (Holly) Rotach; great-grandchildren, Lilly and Ian; granddaughter, Beth Rotach (Geoff Mullin); great-grandchildren, June and Mabel; granddaughter, Kate Merical, granddaughter, Amanda (Rob) Booth; and great-grandchildren, Dillon and Jackson.

The family wishes to thank the staff of The Village at Legacy Pointe, Vintage Hills at Prairie Trail, St. Jude Hospice Care, Dr. Robert Bender, Dr. Kristi Blomberg, Dr. Mark Bissing, Dr. Margaret Verhey, Dr. William Grask, St. Boniface Catholic Church, and Senior Helpers for their care and compassion that made such a difference in Grace's quality of life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waukee, Iowa or a charity of your choosing.
