Obituary

Grace Virginia (Cronk) Eakle, 89, was born in Redfield, Iowa, on September 10, 1915, to William (Willy) and Erma (Ford) Cronk. She passed away on September 8, 2005, two days before turning 90, at the Madrid Home, Madrid, Iowa, in the presence of her loving family.

She attended and graduated from Redfield School and took training to teach. She taught in a small, one-room, rural schoolhouse near Redfield. She was married to Robert Laverne Eakle on March 28, 1935, and four children were born to this union. Bob and Grace farmed near DeSoto and she also worked as a cook at the DeSoto School for a number of years. Grace later worked at the Woodward State Hospital and at Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines. On retirement, they spent winters in Mission, Texas, and loved to travel. She loved to cook and her specialty “Beef and Noodles” was also her family’s favorite. Grace was raised in a Christian home and Christ was a very important part of her life. She was a member for many years of the Adel Christian Church and in later years at the Berwick Christian Church.

Grace will be sorely missed by those who survive, her four children and their spouses: Beverly Kimrey of Adel, Virginia (Ginny) and Jim Frazee of Ankeny, Roberta and Ron Eide of Iowa City, and Robert (Sonny) and Tish Eakle of Woodward; her 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law, Lane and Corinne Peterson of DeSoto; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers: Vere, Max, and Richard Cronk; and stepfather, Jesse Walker.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, where the family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 12, at the funeral home. Committal services will take place at 11:30 a.m. Monday, at Oakdale Cemetery, in Adel. Memorials may be made to the Mercy Foundation for Needy Patients.
