H. Maxine Robinson Obituary

H. Maxine Robinson, 96, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Wesley on Grand. Maxine was born January 20, 1928, in Bagley, Iowa to Ira and Emma (Kunce) Robinson. Maxine started life on a farm near Bagley and later moved to a farm near Scranton, Iowa. She graduated from Bayard High School in Bayard, Iowa in May 1945. After graduation, she worked at Look Magazine in Des Moines for 3 years, saving money to go to college. She received her undergraduate degree from Simpson College. She began her teaching career in Coon Rapids, Iowa, in 1950, and taught there for 8 years. She then moved to Des Moines and continued teaching for the Des Moines Independent Community School District while pursuing a Master’s degree and Ed. D in education from Drake University. She eventually became a Supervisor of Reading for the Des Moines Independent Community School District, continuing until her retirement in 1991. Her passion throughout her long teaching career was helping students become readers.

Maxine was devoted to Grace United Methodist Church where she was a member, and to her women's Circle there. In her spare time, Maxine enjoyed camping at Cutty's, entertaining her nieces and nephews, and piecing quilts. She was an avid game player and spent many hours with friends and family with a game in front of her. She both won and lost with grace and good humor.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her sister (Lois Virginia Gleason), brother (Jerry Lee Robinson), and sister-in-law (Ann Robinson). She is survived by her brother-in-law (Ernest “Bub” Gleason), her loving nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Services to celebrate her long and full life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Iles Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 10:00am. Burial will be at the cemetery in Yale, Iowa.
