Herman J. "Woody" Wedel died July 19, 2003 at home after a short illness. Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines. The burial will be at the church cemetery of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, MO the church where Woody and Evelyn were married in 1946.

Woody was born April 5, 1916 in McPherson County, KS to Jacob T. and Eva Unruh Wedel. He lived in Oklahoma and Kansas City, MO before moving to Des Moines with his wife in 1950.

His faith and trust in God were an important part of his life. He became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He also enjoyed the faith community that attended Mass at Mercy Medical Center.

Woody and Evelyn own Iowa Jewelers Supply which they have operated together for over 50 years. Woody received many honors and awards for his contributions to the jewelry industry. However, it was the friendships that he developed with all of his customers and colleagues that made him happy. His genuine, likeable personality and his never-ending sense of humor made everyone he met feel like family. His wife, son and daughter and their families were his greatest joy and he loved every moment with them. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Woody is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn K. Wedel; his son, Steve of St. Louis, MO and daughter-in-law, Lynn; his daughter, Kathy Herzog of Hockessin, DE and son-in-law, Ben; four granddaughters: Lisa Wedel, Megan Wedel, Sarah Herzog and Kate Herzog; brother, Marvin of Enid, OK; sisters, Ruby Sidman of Wichita, KS, Verbina Claassen of Whitewater, KS and Rosalie Glidewell of Lincoln, AR. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy and Arthur (infant) and sister, Erma Weis.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Dunn's Funeral Home at 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines (accessible from the west during road construction), with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, RR 1, Eugene, MO 65032 or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 West Des Moines, 50265.
