Obituary

Harris Fowler Coggeshall passed away peacefully in his West Des Moines home on August 29, 2020. Harris was born to Harris Marquardt Coggeshall and Harriet Schmidt Coggeshall on July 26, 1940. Harris was born and raised in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1958. Harris then attended Simpson College in Indianola. At Simpson, he became a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated with a degree in business in 1963.

Harris married his high school sweetheart, Susan Mooney, in 1963. At the time of Susan’s passing in 2010, they had been married 47 years. Their marriage was blessed with two sons.

Harris lived a full life. He spent two years in the Navy and was a proud veteran. He became an insurance agent and served Allied and Willis & Moore for many years. Later, Harris became a realtor; he worked for Iowa Realty until his retirement.

In retirement, Harris volunteered his time as a mock trial coach and as a mediator for Polk County and the Better Business Bureau. Harris loved the law and had a great affection for history. Harris also loved the Oakland Raiders and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Harris’ other interests included traveling, woodworking, playing tennis, biking, and being a baseball umpire.

“Coggie” loved spending time with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren for whom he made toy chests and countless wooden toys. Harris also loved making toys for neighborhood children.

Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Harriet Coggeshall, and by his wife, Susan.

Harris is survived by his sons Richard Harris Coggeshall (Tina) and Christopher Harris Coggeshall (Candice); his sister Cynde Coggeshall-Fanter (Bill); his grandchildren Shannon, Kristin, Jordan, and Katie; his great-granddaughter Blakely; and his very special friend, Nadyne Porter.

The family will be holding a private service at Dunn’s Funeral Home on September 19. The family will also host a celebration of life in Harris’ honor on Sunday, September 27. All are welcome to join this celebration from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., in Shelter Two at Jester Park in Granger, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, any donationsmay be made to the VA Hospital with checks to VACIHCS, 3600 30th Street, Des Moines, IA 50310.
