Harry Elmets, 84, known for his irrepressible sense of humor, died on Thursday, October 14, at the end of a long and full life. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Temple B'nai Jeshurun with interment following at Glendale Cemetery.

He devoted himself to his wife of 59 years, Charlotte, to his three sons, and to the practice of medicine as a healer, an educator, and a mentor. He was educated at the University of Iowa and was graduated with distinction by Des Moines University of Osteopathic medicine in 1946. Dr. Elmets' specialty was Dermatology, and he practiced with pride in downtown Des Moines all of his professional life.

Dr. Elmets, who taught at Des Moines University for 55 years, was honored by them on several occasions, including a Doctor of Science honoris CAUSA in 1999. He served on the staffs of nearly all of Metropolitan Des Moines' Hospitals. He was active in areas of public health at all levels from Polk County to National Commissions. Harry Elmets lectured widely to his professional colleagues.

A life long resident of Des Moines and a member of its Pioneer Club, he was a Congregant of Temple B'nai Jeshurun. He was a Mason 33rd degree, a Shriner and a golfer. Having once made a Hole-in-One, he was rarely satisfied with his game.

Harry is survived by his wife Charlotte; three sons, Craig, Steven, and Douglas, and their wives; eight grandchildren; Sylvia and Hugh Wolff of San Antonio, Texas; and three nieces and a nephew.

Contributions may be made to the Harry B. Elmets Endowment Fund at Des Moines University or to Temple B'nai Jeshurun.
