Obituary

arry Edward Smith of Des Moines, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2007, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel in Des Moines. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines immediately following the services. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the funeral home.

Harry was born July 16, 1933, to Thomas J. and Bessie Mae (Mendenhall) Smith in Valley Junction, IA. Harry attended Valley High School where he excelled in track and field, holding at one time a state record. After graduating he entered the Air Force and was stationed overseas for a portion of his eight year enlistment while attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.

Harry worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber in Des Moines for 36 years in the calendaring room and spent time in various other plants training in the calendaring room. He was a member of the United Rubber Workers Local No. 310 and was a union steward for his department. After retiring from full time work, he took on part time employment at K-Mart.

Harry was coach and manager in the Grandview Little League and Little All America Football with his sons and took several Grandview teams to championships. He played fast pitch softball in his younger years. In his retirement years his hobbies turned to fishing, gardening, computers and his special friends at the East Side Senior Citizens Center.

Harry married his wife of 42 years, Margaret "Fudge" in 1953 and was blessed with four children, sons, Mike (Alisa) Smith, Tom Smith, Steve Smith and his friend Shelly Kern, and daughter, Diane Smith and her friend, Mike Baker; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters, Eunice Hughlock and Sandra Harmon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret "Fudge"; sisters, Elizabeth Winter and Luella Moore; and grandson, Michael.

In lieu of flowers, Harry would request that any memorials go to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
