Harvey E. Sims, LTC (retired) US Army, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the service time on Saturday. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Harvey was born the son of Alva D. and Lillian Lewis Sims of Moberly, Missouri. Harvey attended local schools in Moberly and Kemper Military Academy before joining his mother in Juneau, Alaska. From there, he enlisted in the United States Army serving in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. Returning to Moberly he attended Moberly Junior College and the University of Missouri. During this time, he met and married Margaret J Tait. After marriage, his love of country brought another enlistment and a move to Germany with Margaret to serve in the Army of Occupation.

Once out of the Army, he became a reservist accumulating 42 years of service to his country retiring as a LT Colonel US Army. As a civilian, he followed his father into a career in the railroad. In 1962, the railroad brought him and his family to Des Moines as a Sales Consultant. Later on he took a position in the Iowa Department of Transportation, Rail and Water Division as a Public Service Executive continuing his knowledge and love of railroads.

Harvey was blessed in marriage to his wife, Margaret for 57 years. Together they were known and loved in their neighborhood and were featured in The Des Moines Register "Neighbor of the Week" column. While Margaret kept the neighborhood children entertained and supplied with a piece of candy, Harvey was the one behind the scenes keeping everything running and was called upon more than once to come help get the bat out of someone's house. He also lead the annual 4th of July parade down the block carrying a US flag that had flown over the US Capitol on his birthday. He served as a Deacon in his church and ran for Iowa State Representative.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret J. Sims and is survived and lovingly remembered by Elyse Sims of Johnston, IA and Scott Sims of Kansas City, MO. In addition to his human family, Harvey is survived by a four-footed quadruped, Spike, a rescue cat. Spike has shown Harvey what a gift a rescued animal can be as Spike owned Harvey.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that any memorials be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
