Hazel "Vickie" Alingh Obituary

Vickie May Alingh, 90, of Des Moines, IA, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines.

Vickie was born May 20, 1934 on the Big Island Hawaii in Puna, Hawaii. The eldest of three daughters of Manuel and Mary (Barrazo) Victorino. Vickie’s father was a Forest Ranger.

Following high school graduation, Vickie joined the U.S. Marine Corps attending boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. She was subsequently stationed for one year at the Marine Corps Jet Fighter Base at El Toro, California where Vickie was the Commanding General’s Secretary.

This was followed by an assignment to the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, DC where she worked in the Pentagon. Vickie was employed in the weapons area requiring top secret clearance.

While stationed at El Toro, she met Jerry Alingh who was the Base First Sergeant of El Toro. Vickie and Jerry were married in Washington, D.C. while she was stationed there and enjoyed 67 years together. Upon completion of his USMC military service, Jerry returned to the University of South Dakota.

Vickie and Jerry moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota following Jerry’s graduation from the University of South Dakota.

Later they moved to Des Moines where Vickie worked at the Whitfield Law Firm serving as Mr. Whitfield’s secretary.

Vickie loved to do counted cross stitch and earned many awards, including first place, among her many State Fair entries.

Vickie is survived by her children Steve (Janet) Alingh of Cherokee, Iowa and Cathy (Ken) Dohrmann of Omaha, and a grandson, Nicholas Alingh.

Graveside military rites will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, Iowa.
