Helen Galinsky passed away on January 20, 2015 at the Iowa Jewish Life Center. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at Jewish Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Helen was born in Chicago on May 28, 1913 to Jacob and Jesse Duitch. She was raised in Ames, Iowa and graduated from Ames High School. In 1933, she married Louis (Blackie) Galinsky and she cherished the 67 years he was by her side.

Helen showed early talent at the piano, playing by ear when she was in her early teens. Her career as a professional pianist lasted seven decades and she was known by her stage name as Helen Gale. In recent years, she performed annually at the "Jazz in July" series at the Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. Hundreds of her former and new fans enjoyed hearing creative medleys of show tunes and old favorites. In 2002, Helen was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame, an award given by the Greater Des Moines Community Jazz Center.

Helen was a beautiful lady who lit up the room with her smiles, laughter and rare sense of humor. She always faced life with a positive attitude and never allowed problems to bother her.

She is survived by her son James (Elise), three grandchildren, Blair (Vicki), Scott and Victoria and two great grandchildren, Rebekeh and Danielle. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Louis and sisters, Alice Bloom, Bess Waldinger and brother, Paul Duitch.

The Galinsky family expresses their grateful thanks to the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for their extraordinary love and care given to Helen during the last eight years that she called the Life Center home.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to The Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, 900 Polk Blvd., Des Moines, IA 50312 or to Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Blvd ., Des Moines, IA 50312.
