Helen Lucille Pritchard, 94, died Sunday, September 23, 2007 at Hospice Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

A Graveside Service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines.

Helen was born and raised in Sac County, graduating from Sac City High School in 1931. She was married to Harold Wayne Pritchard of Ogden, Iowa on June 30, 1940. Helen and Wayne moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1950 where Wayne was hired to serve as executive secretary of the fledging Soil Conservation Society of America (SCSA). Helen worked as a bookkeeper for the SCSA for many years while Wayne led the SCSA to prominence as an important national and international organization. They retired from SCSA in 1978 and moved to Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines in 1983 where they lived in retirement. Helen and Wayne were members of the First Christian Church of Des Moines where they were active members until regular attendance became very difficult due to health.

As one of the long-term independent residents of Scottish Rite Park, Helen was active in the daily activities of the Park and served for many years as the editor of the Park newsletter, the "Hilltop News". Helen enjoyed politics, playing bingo and bridge, and solving word games and puzzles. She believed that these activities helped to maintain a sharp mind. She treasured the many friendships she developed over the years at Scottish Rite Park.

Helen was preceded in death by Wayne, her husband of 53 years, her daughter Mary Elizabeth (Pritchard) Ehling, a brother and two sisters. She is survived by one sister, Genevieve (Spayde) Layman of Las Vegas, Nevada, her daughter, Nancy Ann (Edwin) Miller of Stillwater, Oklahoma, son-in-law, Dean Ehling of Anoka, Minnesota. Three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or the Good Brotherhood of Scottish Rite Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel.
