Helen Sherman Harmon died on Monday, August 25, 2003 at Wesley Acres at the age of 99. Mrs. Harmon was born in Beatrice, Nebraska on June 29, 1904. She graduated from Cotner College in Bethany, Nebraska where she met her husband, Henry Gadd Harmon. After serving as the President of William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, Dr. Harmon with Mrs. Harmon moved their family to Des Moines where Dr. Harmon served as the President of Drake University until his death in 1964. As the wife of the President of the University, Mrs. Harmon entertained thousands of faculty and students in their home as well as world, national, state and religious leaders of the time.

Mrs. Harmon served in many civic positions including Chair of the Residential Division of the United Campaign and was active in The League of Woman Voters and the YWCA. She remained involved in activities on the Drake campus long after Dr. Harmon's death. She belonged to First Christian Church, Comment Club, Proteus Club and was a Patron of Mu Phi Honorary Music Society. Following her husband's death, she served as a Customer Service Representative with the Valley Bank and Trust Co.

Mrs. Harmon's cremains will be interred in a family plot near Cable, Wisconsin where the family spent most of their summers since the 1920's. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and David Baker of Scottsdale, AZ, and son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Muffy Harmon of Des Moines. She also leaves four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Thrasher and a grandson, John Harmon Baker.

A memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m. on September 6, 2003 at First Christian Church, 25th and University Avenue. Memorials may be sent to the Drake University Endowment Fund.
