Obituary

Holly Sue Williams, our favorite Christmas blessing, was born December 17, 1982 to Julia Williams & the late Lee Williams. The nursery wrapped her in a bright red Christmas stocking instead of swaddling blankets because even then, they knew she was a gift.

Sweet Holly, the light of our lives, loved fiercely. Everyone she met immediately became enamored with her witty, generous spirit. There were never strangers, only friends she hadn't met yet.

She was all about service & empathy, dedicating her adult life to a career at FEMA right after graduating from Iowa State University with a major in Journalism and a minor in Women’s Studies. Starting as a local hire, she advanced several levels including training to public assistance in the PA field delivery section of Region Seven, where she made lifelong friends.

She loved her music and going to concerts every chance she got, favoring an eclectic blend of genres. As a musician herself (clarinet, saxophone, handbell choir) she was discriminating on a level above most, but if a certain artist spoke to her she dove into fandom easily.

While she enjoyed travel and was a stimulating yet calming travel partner, the comfort of home always called. As long as someone else could rescue her from the occasional spider, she was content.

Making people smile was her greatest contribution. She loved a "Dad Joke", a bad pun, a silly face, a humorous story. Always one to find a silver lining in life’s ups and downs, she was a joy to know and love.

Her collections of earrings and designer purses was iconic. She was a lover of fashion and shared her passion with her beloved niece along with hours of playing dolls, board games aplenty, puzzles, reading books, and make-up applications. She also was a connoisseur of giving and receiving head rubs which was a pleasure with her thick, glorious hair.

She loved animals; her dog family included Noelle (a Maltese/Llasa apso mix), Jerry (a Springer, of course) Sophie (a Labrador Flat Coat Retriever) and cats (Chitz, Japp, Inga & Helgi) pampered by her sister & brother-in-law.

Holly was civic-minded, an avid voter, proud Democrat, the epitome of compassion and kindness with a huge dose of humor.

After a courageous fight, Holly Sue Williams, 38, passed peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Methodist Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13th at Iles Westover Chapel. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. The family also invited you to join in a reception of light refreshments at Christ United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

Family, lucky enough to watch her blossom and to have the privilege of sharing her with the world include her mother Julia Williams, her sister Amy Williams, her brother Michael Williams, brother-in-law Ed Mahlberg and niece Emily Nelson-Williams, aunts, uncles & cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Lee Williams and grandparents Richard and Viola Williams, Jack and Iris Deskin.

If so inclined, in Holly’s honor, memorial contributions may be made to Rescue, Rehab, Rehome, or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
