Howard Ruggles Obituary

Howard Leigh Ruggles, 77, of Grimes, IA, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Mercy One in Des Moines, IA.

Howard was born June 15, 1947, in Washington, IA, son of Cecil and Virginia (Cole) Ruggles. He received his education in Hedrick, IA where he graduated in 1966. He continued his education and graduated with an accounting degree from Truman State University. Howard served his country during the Vietnam War until his discharge in July of 1970. On August 12, 1973, he was united in marriage to Ann Swanson at the First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa, IA. Howard worked as the Quality Control Director for Dee Zee until his retirement.


Howard was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Grimes Lions Club. In free time he enjoyed woodworking, traveling, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family. Howard was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Roger.

Howard is survived by his wife Ann, son Jeff (Barbra) Ruggles of San Diego, CA, daughter Beth (Ryan) Holdsworth of Grimes, five grandchildren, Madalyn, Emma and Sofia Ruggles, and Nolan and Nile Holdsworth and a brother Richard (Julie) Ruggles of Humboldt, IA.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at the Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes. Burial will be at a later date in the Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
