Hugh B. Mellor, 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 12, 2010 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after suffering a stroke.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 16, at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Dunn's Saturday, July 17, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery with military honors given for Hugh's service in the Navy during World War II. The public is invited to share "Hugh Stories" at 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodlands Creek Senior Living Community Clubhouse, 12655 Woodlands Parkway, Clive, Iowa.

Hugh was a native of Des Moines and the second son born to Archie and Margaret Mellor on June 7, 1925. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 and attended Drake University. He retired from American Abstract Company in 1989.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack.

Hugh was a wonderful, kind-hearted man who never met a stranger. Although his family has been gone for the past 23 years, there were many people who considered Friend Hugh as family. Hugh made life-long friends growing up on Grand Avenue, working at American Abstract Company, the Polk County Courthouse and being involved in The Des Moines Metro Opera. Everyone knew his name at several Des Moines area restaurants, E.P. True Dahls and West Des Moines Library. He loved animals, especially St. Bernards, history, airplanes, cars and playing the piano. He was a member of 7 Flags Fitness Center. Because of Hugh's love for animals and the opera, especially tenors, contributions may be made in his memory to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa or Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc.

"The quality of a man's life is measured by how deeply he has touched the lives of others."
