Hyman Booth of Foster City, California (formerly of Des Moines) died peacefully on June 14, 2009 at the age 90. Beloved husband of Bess Molly Booth for 69 years; loving father of Goldynne "Dynnie" Booth, Alan (Andrea) Booth, Marlene Booth (Avi Soifer), Michelle Booth, and Stuart "Yisroel" (Judy) Booth; adoring grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 14; dear brother of Reva (Morris) Balanoff and Doris (Robert) Barman.

Hyman worked for the Des Moines Fire Department for 34 years, rising to the rank of Fire Captain. A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he served as commander of the Des Moines Jewish War Veterans. Hyman held a lifelong love for East High School and the Iowa Hawkeyes football team. A gifted athlete, he set an Iowa State High School record in the javelin throw in 1936, and in 1980, he was inducted into the B'nai B'rith Iowa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. In 1988, he set a U.S. record for the discus throw in the All American Master's Track & Field. Hyman was a long time member of Beth El Jacob synagogue.

Funeral services will be held graveside at Jewish Glendale Cemetery, Wednesday, June 17th at 11 AM. Memorial donations may be made to the Iowa Firefighter's Memorial, http://www.iowafirememorial.org.
