Iola Washburn, 93, passed away of cancer Saturday, April 21, at Wesley Acres Health Center.

She was born on September 10, 1913 to Emil Earnest and Emma Lessin in Ulster Township in Floyd County. Iola grew up on the family farm and later the family moved to Charles City where her father opened a welding business.

She attended school in Charles City where she graduated in 1932. After graduation she attended the Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls and received a teaching certificate. She graduated from the Iowa Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 with an RN diploma. She worked for the Red Cross and in the Blank Hospital Polio Wards until they were closed after the introduction of the Salk vaccine. She married William Washburn on June 22, 1944. Bill was an accountant in Des Moines. Iola worked as a nurse for 39 years including as head nurse of the Iowa Methodist Hospital psychiatric ward. She and Bill were very active in the Moose and Masonic Lodges and traveled to many conventions. Iola's great passion was her love of crafting which she enjoyed her entire life. She volunteered in later years at Wesley Acres, Living History Farms and the Des Moines Botanical Center. She attended First Christian Church on University Avenue.

Her husband Bill, parents, one sister Myrtle Irene of Dunlap, Iowa, and one brother Ray Lessin of Charles City, preceded her in death. She is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family and friends whose lives she touched in so many ways will remember Iola.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26 at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Living History Farms, or the Des Moines Botanical Center.
