Obituary

Irma Jean Sheets, 90, was surrounded by numerous family members when she peacefully passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm - 8:00pm on Tuesday September 27, 2022, at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines.

Irma, who liked to be called Jeanne, was born on September 6, 1932, in Braddyville, IA, to Paul and Zora (Burch) Bonar. She was the third of four children and had two brothers and one sister. After getting married in 1951, she went on to have three children of her own. Although she did not finish high school at the traditional age, later in life when she had time to dedicate to her own education, she did. She earned her High School Equivalency Certificate in 1969. She then went on to complete a Bookkeeping Certificate in 1970 and a Psychology and Human Relations Certificate in 1975, both from Des Moines Area Community College. Over her lifetime she resided in multiple states, to include Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Iowa, and Arizona.

Jeanne was a dedicated mother that stayed home until all her children were of school age, then she joined the workforce. She held numerous jobs, to include assembly work at a manufacturing company, mailroom positions at several insurance companies, in the guard shack at a trucking company, an usher at a sports arena, a banker at a federal credit union, and lastly as a child support recovery agent for the State of Arizona. She retired in 1997 at the age of 65 and then moved back to Iowa to be around family.

Jeanne had many hobbies, to include ice skating, gardening, she sang in the church choir, and she participated in bowling leagues and earned many trophies. She had an extreme love for animals. She took care of an incredibly large number of cats and dogs over the years; some of which were hers but many of which were willingly inherited from other family members. She was a big fan of Elvis Presley, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the San Francisco 49ers. Nobody will ever forget her favorite foods, which were supreme pizza, Hershey bars, popcorn, and Dr. Pepper; many of which are now her family members favorites too. Lastly, she loved to play solitaire and would spend hours a day doing so.

Jeanne is survived by her two sons, Bill and Ray; daughter, Karen; brother, Richard and his wife Amy; three grandchildren, Kristy, Lisa and Michael; eight great-grandchildren, Shyle, Breanne, Nina, Anthony, Tayler, Halley, Dareus and Cameron; and one great-great grandchild, Zaiden. She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Zora; husband David; brother Ronald, his wife Dolores, their son Jimmy; sister Evelyn, her husband Rusty, their children Angel and Jeff; and her son Raymond’s wife Linda.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) or the Alzheimer's Association.
