Obituary

Iva E. Durst Rutherford, 82, of Des Moines, Iowa quietly passed away after a short illness on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Kavanagh House in West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 18 at Central Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Avenue, Des Moines Iowa with burial following at Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Iva was born on October 6, 1921 in Guthrie County, Iowa to Ozzie and Elvina Durst where she was one of three children. After graduation from high school in Guthrie Center she received her teaching certificate from Drake University and began teaching school in Guthrie County. She married Cleon Rutherford in 1941 and moved to Des Moines, Iowa. During their 17 year marriage they became the parents of two daughters, LaDonna and Marilynn.

After a successful career in cosmetics sales, Iva joined Sears where she retired after 25 years. Iva was a founding member of the first evening women's circle at Central Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, entertaining, dancing and time with her family.

Survivors include Iva's daughter, LaDonna Matthes (Richard) of Naples, Florida and Des Moines, Iowa; LaDonna's sons, R. James of Des Moines and R. Charles of Manhattan Beach, California; Iva's daughter, Marilynn Cedarstrom (Larry) of Windsor Heights, Iowa; Marilynn's stepdaughter, Janell Wysocki (Kenneth) and two stepgrandchildren, Amy and Jenna of Carlsbad, California; and Iva's brother, Melvin Durst (Thelma), two nephews, Tony (Leandra) and Alex (Kim) and three grand-nieces, all of Guthrie Center. Iva was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, 401 Railroad Place, West Des Moines or Central Presbyterian Church.

The family wishes to thank friends and family for their love, prayers and support during this difficult time.
