Obituary

Jack Carl Miller, 88, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 17, 2025. He was blessed to have many members of his loving family by his side for the final week of his life.

Jack was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to William and Mabel (Kaeppler) Krieg. The family later relocated to Des Moines where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955. Jack earned his B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Iowa State University in 1961. He joined the US Army Corps of Engineers and worked on construction projects throughout the US, Greenland, and Thailand. In 1964, he married Janice Eness in Ames. Jack’s structural engineering career led him to Cedar Rapids where he founded the firm M2B Structural Engineers. After retiring from M2B, he continued to work part-time for Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City. During this time, Jack enjoyed a life of leisure fishing, boating, and entertaining grandchildren at his beloved home on the shore of Lake Macbride near Solon, Iowa. After Jan’s passing in 2011, Jack relocated to St Louis, Missouri, and then back to Des Moines from where he enjoyed traveling around the world, playing golf, and participating in local trivia tournaments with his good friends and neighbors from The Plaza on Walnut Street. He worked as a doorkeeper at the Iowa Senate for 5 years starting in 2017.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Paula Miller of Iowa City and Jennifer Levelwind of Aurora, MN; grandchildren, Henry, Carl and Greta Levelwind and Fred (Alyssa) and Giullietta Meraz; and his loving partner, Linda Flaherty. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice; nephews, John Flaherty and Dan Rasmussen, and brothers, Bill and Richard Krieg. He was adored by his in-laws (and “out-laws”) in the Eness and Krieg families, and he loved spending time with his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and one great-grandniece.

His Celebration of Life will be at Gilbert Lutheran Church in Gilbert, Iowa, on September 27, 2025, at 11 am, and he will be laid to rest at South St. Petri Cemetery near Story City, Iowa, next to 4 generations of his wife’s family.

Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

The family requests that memorial donations be directed to support Iowa Public Television.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
