Obituary

Jack Eugene Stoner, 91, passed away peacefully with his family present on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. In agreement with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Jack's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. A private committal service will take place at a later date.

Jack was born on April 23, 1923 in Fort Madison, IA. He moved to Des Moines in 1937, where he attended North High School and Drake University playing the clarinet in the band and orchestra. Jack entered the Army Air Corps Reserve and reported for duty on February 19, 1943, and went on to College for Cadet training in Lansing, MI, where he married his true love, Marian on June 19, 1943. Jack went on to Ft. Myers, FL, for six weeks of gunnery school training and eventually left the States for duty in the Pacific, ending up at Okinawa just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier and retired at 57 years old to move to Table Rock Lake in MO, where they lived until 1993.

In 2011, Jack was privileged to take one of the Honor Flights to Washington, DC with other veterans. He was very active in church, served on the board for the Postal Credit Union, played bridge, enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, and both Iowa Hawkeyes and Cyclones, and loved watching his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids in their activities.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 71 years, Marian; three children, Dennis (Pamela) Stoner, Susan (Jack) Huff, and John (Carla) Stoner; sister, Audrey MacRae; three grandchildren, Jeremy Stoner, Wendy (Kelly) Hansen-Penman, and Brian (Sarah) Huff; and four great-grandchildren, Danica and Audrina Penman, and Carter and Beckley Huff. He is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jack's memory to First Christian Church, 2500 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50311.
