Our sweet mom, Jackie Cornish, 95, of Ankeny, Iowa passed away Monday, January 10, 2022.

Mom was born March 15, 1926 to Cecil and Ruth (Kelly) Knight in Harlan, Iowa. Mom graduated from North High School in Des Moines in June 1943. Shortly after, she traveled to San Francisco, CA to marry her one and only love, John Cornish, on October 31, 1943.

Mom loved to dance - taking classes at Lind Studios from Harriett McGivern. Mom and her brother Huck danced when they were kids. Then mom danced with a group of young girls called the Dancing Debs. (Mom’s favorite dance partner was our dad whom she called Johnny.)

After her graduation she worked for a short time at Register & Tribune and Preferred Risk. She worked for 29 years at Noah’s Ark Ristorante as a cashier, hostess and favorite waitress in the Captains Room until she retired in 1982. However, mom always told us her greatest achievements in life were being a wife, mother, grandmother and sister…she absolutely loved her family.

Mom is survived by (you might want to sit down…this will take a while); 7 children, Mike (Sally) Cornish of Springfield, OH, Pat (Alice) Cornish of Lake Forest, CA, Kelly (Billie) Cornish of Bondurant, IA, Kathy (Jim) Saluri of Des Moines, IA, Judy Capps of Shell Knob, MO, Karen (Larry) King of Grimes, IA, and Audra Sommers of Norman, OK; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren; siblings Jerry (Evelyn) Knight of Melbourne, FL, Tim Knight of Green Valley, AZ, and Judy (Leroy) Seiberling of Montgomery, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; “adopted” daughter Vickie Jaksich of Urbandale, IA; her high school friends of 79 years Doris Jean Douglas of Des Moines, IA, Maggie Stradley of Grimes, IA, and Wanda Hill of Grimes, IA; her special friend Pauline Reese of Des Moines, IA; and numerous friends who were neighbors of hers at the AHEPA II Apartments in Ankeny, IA where she lived independently until July of 2021.

When we were talking with mom about her life here on earth, we asked her: “What are the behaviors and attitudes you admire in others and would like to be remembered for?” Her answer: “Loving, kind, gentle, friendly.” That pretty much sums up what kind of person she was. She was the most kind and loving soul, ALWAYS SMILING, always worried about you…never about herself. She LOVED food and going out to lunch with anyone - her kids, grandkids, her high school friends, and her friends from the Dancing Debs! She was a fantastic cook - some of her specialties were lasagna (if you ask anyone at the memorial service - they probably have had some), chicken salad sandwiches (very popular at the Danny Joe Golf Tournaments), pumpkin bars (the grandkids liked these the best), and most of all her chocolate cake from scratch she made when us kids were growing up. We didn’t even need icing…it came out of the oven, it was sliced, saturated with slabs of butter and served!

Mom was preceded in death by her husband (October 15, 1978), her parents, her brothers Huck (Jinny) Knight and Bill (Dorothy) Knight, her grandson Danny Joe Cornish, her son-in-law Les Capps, her sister-in-law Joanie Knight, and her nephew Jeff Knight.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to one of mom’s favorite charities: American Lung Association (in memory of John Cornish), Diabetes Association (in honor of Michael Cornish and Amy Hamilton) or Children’s Cancer Connection (in memory of Danny Joe Cornish).

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
