James Byrne Smith, 84, died of a heart attack on April 13, 2006. Jim was born on February 3, 1922 in Ottawa, Kansas. His family moved to Lewis, Iowa in 1933. After serving in the Army Air Corp, Jim graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in economics. In 1948, he married his great love, Marilyn Elizabeth Quinn, also of Lewis. They moved to Des Moines in 1954.

Jim was a regional manager for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1948 until 1963 when he became vice president of Equitable of Iowa and later senior vice president of Equitable Investment Services. In 1984, he started his own consulting company and worked until his retirement at age 77.

Jim served on the board of directors of Fidelco Growth Investors; First Wisconsin Realty Advisors; Micra Inc.; Capital Federal Savings and Loan; Equitable of Iowa; F.M. Hubbell Sons & Co.; Hubbell Realty; Tower Companies; Mortgage Bankers of Iowa; Mortgage Bankers Association of America; and the Homes of Oakridge. He also served as president and director of Life Care Retirement Communities.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Smith, and his son, Luke Smith, and is survived by his daughters, Victoria Smith of New York City, Robin Staudt and son-in-law Jake Staudt of Delavan, Wisconsin, Liz Smith of Seattle, Washington, and Emily Smith of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Luke Weil of New York City, Elizabeth Staudt of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nick Weil of New York City, and Quinn Staudt of Washington, DC; and his sister, Margery Johnson of Atlantic, Iowa.

The visitation will be held at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Avenue, from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 16. Funeral services will be held at Dunn's Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Monday, April 17. Burial services will be held in Lewis Cemetery in Lewis, Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Terrace Hill Society.

Jim will be remembered for his enthusiasm for life; his passion for peace and liberal ideals; and the love he shared with those of us fortunate enough to have known him.
