Obituary

James Edward "Jim" Kay, 51, died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications of diabetes.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at Lutheran Church of Hope at 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, October 20, at the church.

Jim was born August 12, 1957 in Marshall, MI and was reared in Lincoln, NE. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a journalist with United Press International in Des Moines and had a long career as a writer and producer at Iowa Public Television. Jim was devoted to his family, friends and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was a wonderful father to his two children, Meagan and Evan. He loved coaching youth soccer, collecting vintage baseball cards, reading about history and listening to an eclectic range of music. He brought laughter and warmth to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Carothers-Kay of Des Moines; daughter, Meagan of suburban Chicago, IL; son, Evan at home; his mother, Frances "Pepper" Kay of Lincoln; sister, Deb Austin of Olathe, CO; brothers, Tom, Bob and John all of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Ted.

Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Friends of Iowa Public Television.
