James L. Carlson, 65, passed away at the end of September after fighting a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Jim was born in Bethany, Missouri, May 27, 1948, the son of Earl Carlson and Winifred Carter Carlson. Jim graduated from North Des Moines High School in 1966, where he was an All-City Football player. Jim interrupted his education at the University of Northern Iowa to join the Army in 1968 where he was stationed in Korea. He resumed college in 1970, graduating in 1972.

Jim married Cynthia Brill in 1970 and they became the parents of Kendall and Erin. Jim and Cyndy were divorced in 1981.

Jim was a home builder for many years in Des Moines, winning the Best In Show four times in the 1980's. He served as softball coach and President of the Urbandale Girls Recreation Association in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He loved girls' softball, coaching and was instrumental in developing and raising funds for the UGRA softball complex.

In 1993, he married LuAnn Ligas and became a loving stepfather to Jessica. Jim and LuAnn moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 2000 where he started Better Living Patio Rooms.

Jim is survived by his wife, LuAnn; children, Kendall (Chad) Herman, Dr. Erin (Abram) Sloss and Jessica (Adam) LaCock; and seven grandchildren, Baylor, Linden, Callan and Soren Herman; Inga Belle Sloss; and Michael and Matthew LaCock. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Earl "Rick" Carlson.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2013 at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Hospital of Omaha, Nebraska or to the family for a donation towards a memorial at the Urbandale Girls Softball Complex.
