Obituary

James Louis "Big Jim" Kelehan, from the 3600 block of Grand Avenue, died November 19, 2003 from complications of a stroke at Kavanagh House. At his request, his body has been donated for medical research to Des Moines University. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2003 at St. Augustine Church Chapel, of which he was a member for 71 years.

Jim was born in Tracy, MN, on May, 17, 1921, the oldest son of Louis and Mary Kelehan. He moved to Des Moines in 1932 with his parents and two brothers, Larry and Charles. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and received his Bachelors degree from Drake University. He was a salesman at heart, whether it was in broadcasting at KIOA, with State Farm Insurance or in real estate before he retired. During his life, he served in many community service organizations including Kiwanis, Rotary and Ad Club. He also served on the Boards for the local Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America. After his retirement, he was active in AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Patricia (Jack) Crosser of Iowa Falls and Mary (David) Hauser of Fergus Falls, MN; sons, Michael (Mary Ann) of Augusta, GA, and James (Daryl) of Marshalltown; and his brother, Charles of Carlisle.

Memorials can be made to St. Augustine Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
