Obituary

Jim McDonald was born on January 29, 1955, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Des Moines on September 23, 2011. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 20, at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 N.E. 52nd Avenue, Des Moines. Burial of the cremated remains will be at Glendale Cemetery at a later date.

Predeceased by his parents, Mildred Hortense (Wieland) McDonald and William Gerald McDonald, he leaves behind his sister, Victoria Lynn McColley of Overland Park, KS; two nieces, Sarah (Tom) Harrington of Mission, KS, and Stephanie (Rob) Murphy of Olathe, KS, along with three grandnieces and one grandnephew. He is also survived by his aunt, Martha Wieland, of Des Moines, and numerous cousins.

Jim lived in Pocahontas, Iowa, until he was seven years old when he and his family moved to Des Moines where he lived until his death. He loved horses and owned two of them when he was young. Later, he got Ben, his beloved springer spaniel who always stayed by Jim's side until Ben died.

Although Jim struggled all of his adult life with medical issues, he was never without a great sense of humor. He was much like his dad, and was never without a quip for everyone. He treated everyone he knew like family. His home was open to anyone who needed a place to stay.

Jim will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. We pause to thank the many people who helped him and made his life easier, especially Scott McDonald and Shari Burleson and the home health care givers.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 29, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m.
