James Emery, 69, died suddenly on April 21, 2012 while attending an annual fishing trip with family and friends at the Lake of the Ozarks. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, with burial following at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jim was born on February 12, 1943, in Coon Rapids, Iowa to James and Helen Emery. He attended St. Johns elementary school in Des Moines. He graduated from Dowling (the real one) High School in 1961. Jim has maintained a close relationship with many of his classmates from his days at St. Johns and Dowling.

In his early career, Jim worked at Sears in contract sales. In 1984, he left Sears to form his own home construction company, Quail Valley Homes. Jim became a successful home builder in the Des Moines area. He was a member of the Des Moines Home Builders Association and became president in 1995-1996. Twice he was selected Home Builder of the Year, once in 1997, and again in 2000.

Jim was also an active member of the Clive Historical Society where he served as president for many years. He was instrumental in restoring the Swanson House and the Clive Depot. Jim was named Clive Citizen of the Year in 2000.

Jim was a man who loved life. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, and travel. He loved a good political debate and great food and drink, especially with his friends and family.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary; his mother Helen Rule; his daughters Wendy (Mark) Bockenstedt, Leigh (Robert) Luse; his stepsons Nathan (Brianna) Merrill, Michael (Kristen) Myers, Daniel Myers; his brother Mike (Marlene) Emery; and his sisters Kay (Bill) Moeller, Deb (Walter) Gaskins, and Kim (Jeff) Young; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his father James W. Emery Sr.; his step-father William C. Rule; and his nephew Michael R. Emery.
