Jane Kimber Hummel, 66, passed away peacefully amongst loved ones on Friday, May 1, 2015. She courageously fought her battle against neuromuscular disease for nearly 30 years. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive. Private inurnment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Jane was born August 10, 1948, in Sioux City, IA to Vernon and Dorothy Olson. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1966, and completed her teaching degree from the University of Iowa in 1970. Jane enjoyed immensely her years teaching elementary students, with the majority of the time spent at Delaware Elementary in the Southeast Polk School District.

Jane is survived by her husband, Mark Hummel of Urbandale; three children, Jason (Crista) Geary of Marshall, WI, Beth (Chris) Nelson of Urbandale, IA, and Anne (Colin) Yoder of Mondovi, WI; four grandchildren, Natalie and Drew Nelson and Natalie and Ian Brickl; siblings, Kim (Jim) Ciurej, Craig (Lisa) Olson, Jason (Kris) Olson, Mike (Connie) Larson, Patty Larson (Jerry) Martin, and Lori (Rich) Mann; stepmother, Ouida Olson; and many beloved in-laws from the Hummel family: Bill and Sally Hummel, Gordy Hannan, Susan Hummel (Larry Pace), Kevin (Cindy) Hummel, Perry Hummel, Lynne Hummel, and Janet (Kelly) Broderick; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and treasured friends. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, David; her brother-in-law, Robert; her sister-in-law, Marcy; and her niece, Gretchen.

Jane and Mark met in Iowa City and were married in 1977. They spent the next 38 years building a life together and raising their children in Urbandale. Jane's passions were reading, solving and writing crossword puzzles, and her family. She loved spending time at the family cabin in Minnesota, swimming, doing puzzles and playing games (she was the undisputed Trivial Pursuit champion). Jane was a great listener, a trusted confidante and advisor, and had a witty sense of humor that her family and friends adored. In her later years, Jane enjoyed her days with her caretaker and friend, Rachel Fritz, and her beloved dogs, Gabby and Sammy.

Jane will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She was kind and gentle, but to many, the strongest fighter they knew. While Jane's absence will leave a hole in the hearts of many, her family knows that she is in a better place, enjoying all the things she loved to do.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Iles-Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or Faith Lutheran Church. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
