A Short Summary of A Beloved Sister's Life

She was born Janet Jean Stoner on May 18, 1936 in Spencer, Iowa to Warren and Flora McMillan Stoner of Peterson, Iowa. She attended Peterson Consolidated School and graduated in 1954. Janet enrolled at Iowa State University and later transferred to Iowa University where she graduated and met her future husband, Thomas James McDonough. She and Jim were married in 1958.

They lived in Fairbanks, Alaska while Jim served In the Army and then returned to Iowa University where he finished his law degree. Later when Jim was on the law faculties at the universities of South Dakota and Arkansas, Janet earned Master's and PhD degrees in psychology. They moved to Des Moines when Jim accepted a position on the law faculty at Drake University and spent the rest of their lives here. Janet practiced as a clinical psychologist in Des Moines and spent all of her working life helping people make their lives better.

Janet loved music and was a talented pianist in addition to being a staunch supporter of the Des Moines Symphony. She was a devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church and played the piano for the early service for many years. Janet made beautiful quilts for her family and friends. She was one of the founders of the Breakfast Exchange, a club of business and professional women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, all her aunts and uncles and many first cousins.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Donald (Kelly) Meyer, two nephews, Kelly and Michael Meyer and their families, first cousin Joan Norman and many friends.
