Jean Steward Obituary

Jean Marcia Steward, age 94, of Windsor Heights, Iowa, and formerly of West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Karen Acres Health Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa.

Jean was born June 13, 1930, in Boone, Iowa, to Roy and Bess (Anderson) Steward. Jean, along with her two sisters (Jane and Joye), were a set of triplets. They had two older brothers, Jack and Donn. The family moved from Boone to Des Moines around 1941 and Jean graduated from Des Moines’ North High School in 1948.

Jean had a career with the phone company for 40+ years starting at Northwestern Bell. She worked in 1948 for a little bit, left and went back in 1952 until her retirement in 1992. She worked for most of those years in Des Moines. When AT&T split from all the Bell Telephone companies, she went with AT&T and later transferred to the Minneapolis office for the last 5 years of her career.

She moved back to Des Moines and began volunteering at various places in the community. One of those positions was at the airport. She was very well versed with maps, Des Moines, and the surrounding area, and enjoyed sharing that knowledge at the Information Desk at the Des Moines International Airport.

An avid card player her whole adult life, Jean played cards several days a week during her retirement. Bridge mostly, but also cribbage, hand and foot, and pitch. She also enjoyed playing dominoes.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Roy and Bess Steward; brothers, Jack and Donn; and sisters, Jane and Joye.

Jean never married, but is survived by cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Windsor Heights United Methodist Church with Pastor Jon Bailey officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens, 1 NE 60th Ave, Des Moines, IA 50313.
