essie Lou Jenkins, a loving mother and active member in the community, passed away on March 1, 2007.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 8, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel, with burial following at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Jessie was born in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Katherine Aiken on March 23, 1927.

Happily married over 60 years, Jessie's husband, Lyle, passed away in January, 2006.

She is survived by her children, Gerald Jenkins and Cheryl Baughman as well as their families: Gerald's wife Linda of Reston, Virginia and their children, Richard Jenkins also of Reston, Virginia and Erin (Chris) Pendleton and their children, Noah and Ryan of Ashburn, Virginia; Cheryl's husband Bill of Newell, Iowa and their son Charles (Stacey) Baughman of Surprise, Arizona.

The majority of Jessie's professional life was spent serving as a school secretary for 36 years in Des Moines Public Schools, 19 years of which was at Merrill Junior High. She was also a member of the National Educational Secretaries Association and was written up in Marquis Who's Who of American Women in Business 1979 to 1980 edition.

Jessie devoted her time to her family and civic organizations, including Acanthus Waveland OES #530, Acanthus Rainbow, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Daughter's of the Nile, Des Moines Women's Club, Urbandale Women's Club, and Tau Phi Lambda.

She was also very active in the American Business Women's Association and the National Homebuilder's Association. In ABWA, she was a past president. In Homebuilders, she served in a variety of roles including National Convention and Program Chairman and was also named "Woman of the Year" in 1991. During her time as Educational Chairman for Home Builders, she started the Home Model and Drawing Contest for the schools of the Greater Des Moines Area.

Jessie enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, knitting, bowling and playing bridge.

Jessie will be remembered by her family and friends as being loving, efficient, and active in everything she did.

A visitation will be held at the Iles Funeral Home, Westover Chapel from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
