Obituary

JoAnne (Bishop) Brown, 72, of Pleasant Hill, formerly of east Des Moines, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Des Moines Lutheran Hospital. She had lived in the Central Iowa area for more than 50 years moving from rural Greene County.

Brown was born Sept. 6, 1936, in Greene County, the daughter of Ross and Nadine (Woltz) Bishop, Dana. She graduated in 1955 from Dana Consolidated Schools. She moved to Des Moines in 1955 and worked for Look magazine where she operated an Addressograph machine. Following her marriage in 1958, she attended the American Institute of Business, Des Moines, and graduated with training as a keypunch operator. She then became a keypunch operator for Frye Manufacturing, east Des Moines. She also worked as a proofreader and bookkeeper for The Urbandale News and its sister newspapers and Rapid Printing, Inc.

She married Dwain Homer Brown, formerly of Beaconsfield, in Ringgold County, on Sept. 20, 1958. They were married at the Lutheran Church in Dana and settled in east Des Moines. They later moved to 3029 Kinsey Ave. in east Des Moines, where they lived until 1980 when they moved to Pleasant Hill where Dwain operated his home TV and VCR repair business.
Brown was a girls' basketball standout in her high school days and continued to enjoy and follow the sport throughout her life. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to play the game. She was an avid collector of wolf and moose figurines. With her family, she enjoyed vacations and visited most of the United States and into Canada. She was a great fan of reading Danielle Steele books. She also loved her cats and dogs. Her biggest joy was being a wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, Dwain, Pleasant Hill; her son, Kevin, of Clarinda formerly of Des Moines; daughter Jennifer and son-in-law, Mark Overton, of Des Moines; and daughter-in-law Helena (Brown) Judge, Carlisle. Her grandchildren are Kenneth, Des Moines; Nicole, Des Moines; Jonathan, Des Moines; Annah, Carlisle; Amanda, Carlisle; and Joshua, Carlisle. Her sisters are Rose Marie Wham, Casper, WY; Marilyn Jacobson, Scranton formerly of Ralston; and Barbara Morrison, Gowrie formerly of Glidden. Her aunt, Mary (Wotlz) Olson, Des Moines; and aunt Betty Brashear, Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael, Des Moines; her brother, Danny, Jefferson; her infant brother Darwin, Dana; her parents Ross and Nadine Bishop, Dana; her uncle Kenneth Wotlz, Des Moines.
Visitation with the family will be from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday, April 13, at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home and Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Ave., east Des Moines. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the funeral home with a second visitation one hour prior to the service. A reception will be hosted at the home of Mark and Jennifer Overton, Des Moines. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1730 28th St., West Des Moines, IA, 50265.
