Joan Peterson Obituary

Joan Lee Peterson, 82, Des Moines, Iowa died at home on Sunday, July 23, 2023. She was born July 27, 1940 in Benton County, Iowa to Willard & Charlotte (Clark) Gray.

Joan retired from the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines in 1995 after over 35 years of service with the Federal Government. Many of her family continued that legacy of employment at V.A. Des Moines.

Survivors include daughters, April Moos-Dawson and Kathy (Carroll) Cake, son, Donald (Melinda) Moos II, 7 grandchildren,14 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and brother Russell Gray.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard & Charlotte, brother Ronald Gray, son-in-law Charles M. Dawson, and her beloved Shih Tzu dogs.

Joan was a very independent, hard-working, and self-sufficient woman. When not working she was on many church committees at Staves United Methodist Church in Des Moines where she was a loyal member.

Hobbies included knitting, crocheting, needlework, sewing, painting ceramics, landscaping, Hosta flower collecting, and spoiling her Shih Tzu pups.

The family will greet friends from 10:00am to 10:30am, Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50317. Joan’s celebration of life service will begin at 10:30am following the half hour greeting time. A reception in the church hall will follow the service.

Interment will be at a later date in Bear Creek Cemetery, Benton County, Iowa.

Memorials in Joan’s honor may be directed to Staves Memorial United Methodist Church Education fund or Iowa Diabetes Association.
