Joan W. Boldt, 78, died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Iowa Methodist West Medical Center in West Des Moines and was relieved of her struggle with Alzheimer's. A memorial service will be held November 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church.

Joan was born August 23, 1935 in Parkersburg, W.Va., to Earl and Alice (Wilson) Wolfe. She was a graduate of the University of West Virginia where she studied music. Joan married and later moved to Champaign, Ill., where she lived for many years and worked as a public relations coordinator for a Northwestern Mutual General Agent. She was actively involved with the Champaign County Humane Society. Everyone soon learned of her undying love for animals and her passion for protecting them.

In 1999 Joan moved to Des Moines to be near her daughters and grandchildren. She and Wes Boldt were married in 2001 and had a very happy marriage. They shared a love of tennis, travel, friends and family. Through Wes's business, they had an opportunity to travel abroad. Some of Joan's favorite spots were Ireland, Japan and Columbia.

Joan, a truly remarkable lady who never met a stranger, had a smile and compliment for everyone she met. She was blessed with a terrific sense of humor and excelled as a writer. In Des Moines, her primary writing contribution was for the newsletter of the Junior League Sustainer organization. Joan was a member of a writing group who lovingly referred to her as the "Comma Queen". Joan was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, P.E.O. and Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. She was especially fond of Labrador Retrievers and classical music.

Survivors include her husband, Wes Boldt of Des Moines; daughters: Alicia (Ted) Economos of Urbandale, Jennifer (Jack) Hilmes of Des Moines; and grandchildren: Kristin and John Economos, John, Jackie, and Julianne Hilmes.

Memorial contributions may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and administration at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center for the wonderful compassionate care they provided to Joan during her brief stay with them.
