Joel "Joe" Francis Pattee was born September 3, 1955 in Fort Dodge, IA to Marie and Leo Pattee and was raised in Pocahontas, IA. He died suddenly at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA on October 25, 2014. Visitation will take place Tuesday, October 28 at Iles Westover Chapel, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00. The Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2926 Beaver Ave, Des Moines at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 29. Private burial will be at Chapel Hills Gardens Cemetery at a later date.

Joe attended Pocahontas Catholic School through the 8th grade and graduated from Pocahontas Community High School. He graduated from Des Moines Area Community College with a degree in Business. Since his graduation from college, he has lived in the Des Moines area and worked for several lumber companies. At the time of his death he was a lumber salesman at Gilcrest-Jewett Lumber.

Joe was known for his generous spirit, strong work ethic and his art of storytelling. He was a wonderful grandpa to Leo and Pace Allen, who brought him great joy. In his free time he enjoyed his cabin at Diamond Head Lake, fishing, sailing on Saylorville Lake, and doing carpentry work. He had a love for all kinds of music. He was an avid auto racing fan and his enthusiasm for the sport took him to the Indianapolis 500 every year. He was known for his huge backyard 4th of July parties with a fireworks display that entertained the whole neighborhood, including law enforcement who watched from afar.

Joe is survived by the love of his life, Jeanne McCartan; her children, Erin (Jeff) Allen of Minneapolis, MN and Shane Behanish and his fiance', Jennifer McCurdy of Denver, CO; and grandchildren, Leo and Pace Allen. He is also survived by his mother, Marie Pattee and his brother, Howard (Diane) Pattee of Pocahontas, and sisters, Diane Hallquist and Janice Pattee of Indianapolis, IN and Joane (John) Amick of Oelwein, IA. "Bucko Joe" was loved by 9 nieces and nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews as well as many longtime friends who were very special to him. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Pattee and brother-in-law, Derry Hallquist.

The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses at Iowa Methodist Medical Center who cared for Joe in his final hours. Memorial contributions may be given to his family. A donation will be made to Blank Children's Hospital in memory of Joe.
