Obituary

John Parry, 60, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Kavanagh House on West Grand Avenue, after a nearly three-year battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15 at Westover Funeral Home 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines with Pastor John S. Gallentine of Covenant Presbyterian Church presiding. Private burial of his cremated remains will be at Highland Cemetery in New Sharon, Iowa.

John was born on May 2, 1945 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines to Emlyn Clemens Parry and Arlene (Colville) Parry McBane. He was a graduate of Grandview College and earned a BA from Drake University in May 1975. John served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, active duty two years, August 1966 to August 1968, being discharged in 1971. He was self-employed ten years while operating "Wood Design" in Ankeny where he repaired, restored and reproduced antique furniture and made cabinets. He joined Goodwill Industries of Des Moines as Industrial Services Director and remained there nearly eighteen years before his illness. John had several interests including golf, music, gardening, model trains, sailing and home projects.

John is survived by his mother, Arlene Parry McBane of Heather Manor in Des Moines; his brother, Alan Parry of Earlham; his niece, Patrica Parry of Des Moines; his nephews, Timothy (Susan) of Des Moines, Jeffrey (Sue) of Des Moines, Michael of Des Moines and Brian Parry of West Des Moines; and six grand nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
