John Lucien Caponi, 60, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021. Visitation will be held at Iles Westover Funeral Home 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322 on Sunday, September 5 from 1:00-3:00pm with a service following at 3:00pm. Burial will be at a later date.

John is the oldest son in the Caponi family born on February 25, 1961, in St. Paul, MN, to parents, Damiano and Patricia Parlin Caponi. He is survived by his mother Patricia, son John Daniel Bonsall, daughter-in-law, Sarah Bonsall, grandchildren, George, Carina & John Atticus Bonsall and siblings Nancy Clare (Robert Adams) Caponi, Mary Letizia Caponi, Robert Caponi, Susan (David) Arvidson. He was loved by his many nieces and nephews, Amber (Chris) Nigon, Clayton & Patrick (Erin Lain) Hamilton, Clare (Benjamin Pflughoeft), Catherine & Mary Cecilia Arvidson, Sebastian & Collin Oeltjen, Liliana Carey, Crystal & Ruby Caponi and grandnieces Audrey & Chloe Nigon. John will be missed by his aunts, cousins and many friends. John is preceded in death by his sister Anna Caponi and father Damiano.

John attended school in West Des Moines. He honorably served in the United States Navy. He lived in New Orleans for several years before returning to Des Moines. He was a contractor and beloved landlord to many tenants over the years. His work relationships left the world a better place. Besides his family, John loved dogs, cars, working with his hands, good music and desserts of any kind. He had a quick wit and a smile that lit up the room. John was known for his work ethic and his generous spirit. He was truly loved by many.

Of all of his many accomplishments, he was certainly most proud of his son, daughter-in-law and beautiful grandchildren. They were the joy of his life. Memorials are preferred. John loved to send flowers to the people who were special in his life. To honor John, think of a person who might appreciate a lift, and send them some flowers.

John’s service will be livestreamed on the Iles website. Go to www.IlesCares.com just before 3:00pm Sunday and scroll to the bottom of John’s obituary to the video section to join the service.
