John P. Snider, of Granger, Iowa and formerly of Des Moines, died Monday, November 14, 2005 at Granger Manor Nursing Home. Services will be held at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines at 1 p.m. Friday, November 18th. A visitation will be held at Westover Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 17.

John was born on December 14, 1924 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of John P. and Elsie Snider. He served honorably in WWII's Pacific Theater as a United States Navy Pharmacist Mate. After his service, he married Dixie Johnson and began his family having six children. After Dixie's passing in 1970, he married Judy L. Frazier on July 26, 1971 and his family grew to nine children.

John attained a BA degree from the University of Iowa, a Masters degree from Drake University and he attended an Iowa State University graduate program. He then applied his education over his 37 year teaching profession, beginning in Onawa, Iowa and continuing in Des Moines at Callanan Junior High, Franklin Junior High, Roosevelt High School and on the air at KDPS Public Television. He cherished the relationships he built over the years with students, faculty and staff.

In addition to his teaching career, he was very involved in the antique business in West Des Moines. He was a partner in the concessions at Grays Lake in Des Moines, and he was also a talented building and painting contractor. He was involved with Boy Scouting, Campfire and YMCA Indian Guides.

John and Judy retired to Rogers, Arkansas and shared their passion for fishing for several years before returning to West Des Moines in 2000, spending their recent months in Granger, Iowa.

John is survived by his wife, Judy L. Snider; two sons, John (Jodi) Snider and Mark (Laura) Snider; four daughters, Laurie Herring, Ellen (Gerald) Grimes, Wendy (Bret) Clikeman and Jill (Jim) Gray; three step-sons, Michael (Mell) Frazier, Jeff (Joan) Frazier and Tom Frazier; and many loving and lovely grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Elsie (Hancock) Snider; step-mother, Dorothy Nissen; first wife, Dixie (Johnson) Snider; and daughter-in-law, Danelle Frazier.

Memorial contributions may be given in John's name to the Boy Scouts of America.
