Obituary

Joseph Reid, age 86, died March 3, 2008. Celebration of life memorial service will be held Sunday, April 27, 4 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ. Born in Waterloo, Iowa December 28, 1921, he spent his boyhood playing on an island in the Cedar River where he lived with his parents, Andrew and Helen Reid, and his three siblings, Martha, Wally, and Mary Catherine. He loved to tell everyone his childhood stories.

He attended Iowa State Teacher's College and Michigan State University where he studied restaurant management. He left early to join the Army and enlisted in the horse cavalry. He served in WW II in the most traveled Army infantry division.

He married his spouse, Mary, July 25, 1948 at the First Congregational Church of Waterloo. She joined him in Des Moines where they owned a restaurant on Ingersoll Avenue. Joe became employed by Equitable of Iowa and worked there for thirty years. He retired in 1983.

He spent his last 25 years joyously serving his community. He joined Plymouth Congregational Church in 1954 where he served as a deacon and on the family life, arts and music committees. He especially loved the Matins Choir which he faithfully and artistically captured through his photography. His slide show provides an orientation to all new members of the church. He also volunteered for 25 years for Hubbell Elementary School tutoring 2nd and 3rd graders. A mural in his honor, created by Paul Micich, will be installed in the school library. He loved nature and spent hours gardening, canoeing and sailing.

He is survived by his spouse, Mary, his sister Martha Murphy (Tom, Manly, IA), children Randy (Cynthia, Clear Lake, IA) and Catherine (John Forde, St. Paul, MN) and grandchildren Jacob, Elizabeth, Kara and Eli. He donated his body to University of Iowa.

Memorials preferred to Hubbell Elementary School Foundation, Plymouth Arts Program or Hospice of Central Iowa.
