Obituary

Joseph Edward Power III (Joe), 57, of Des Moines, IA. passed away of a cerebral hemorrhage at the University of Iowa Hospital on November 1, 2024. Joseph was born in Des Moines on December 16, 1966 to J. Edward and Camille Power. Joe was the oldest of three brothers. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he earned a BA from University of Northern Iowa in 1989 and an MBA from Drake University in 1991. While at Drake, he consulted for the Drake Small Business Development Center and appraised houses for Iowa Appraisal. After completion of his masters degree, Joe worked as a commercial and industrial real estate appraiser until health issues forced an early retirement.

Joe was the glue who held his family together. He was there for anyone in need - family, friend, or stranger. Joe treasured his time with family and friends. His hobbies and passions included photography, genealogy, and outdoor activities. Joe was an accomplished pilot, scuba diver, boater, and downhill skier. He was an active participant in the Faith Builder class at Plymouth Church, and was considering a future role in ministry. Joe shared his talents volunteering as an ESL Tutor with the Adult Literacy Center, the Animal Rescue League, and Central Iowa Shelter & Services.

Joe is survived by his mother, Camille (Cammy) Power; brothers David and James Power; niece, Camilla Power; aunts and uncle, Judy and Dick Smith, and Diane Repass; cousins, Lori Schaefer-Weaton, Nate Weaton, Brian Smith, David and Teresa Repass, and Julie Repass; many cherished second cousins, and his loving dog, Goldie.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Edward Power and Uncle Dale Repass.

The family is honoring Joe’s request to have a private service. Donations may be made to Plymouth Church Foundation, DMARC Food Pantry, or charity of choice.

Joe was able to provide for others by being an organ donor to fulfill his final wishes.
